These creatures live in the hollows of large bamboo. If bamboo is not cured correctly the Zahisiki - Hikigaeru will remain in the bamboo.

These creatures live in the hollows of large bamboo. If bamboo is not cured correctly the Zahisiki - Hikigaeru will remain in the bamboo.
They disturb the sleep of people living in homes built with this inferior quality bamboo, by dancing in the owners geta sandals and flatulating. Their flatus smells like burning wood so the unfortunate home owners awaken in a panic thinking that their house is on fire.
It is also said that Zashiki-Hikigaeru may invade homes built without a proper jijinsai or "ground pacification ritual" .
